My Services
For each of my services, I will provide a detailed report explaining where the problems lie and my suggestions for improvement. I can use the relevant proofreading and copyediting symbols, providing you with a key if necessary, or provide my comments in plain English.
Once you, or your web designer, have made the necessary changes, I can provide an optional follow-up service to check that the changes have been made accurately.
Proofreading
I will check for problems such as:
• spelling, grammar and punctuation errors;
• omission and repetition of words;
• transposed letters or words;
• spacing errors between letters, words and lines;
• incorrect word use;
• errors in use of bold, underlining and italics.
In traditional publishing, the proofreader will see the typed copy (or proofs) ready for publication and do final checks for mistakes before it is retyped and published. A publication may go through a couple of proofreading stages to ensure corrections are incorporated.
For your business, providing this service will usually mean reviewing the website you have already published. If you are yet to publish your website, I can also review the content you intend to publish.
Copyediting
This service includes the same checks as the proofreading service but adds an extra level of detail and checks for problems with:
• sentence sense: ambiguity/verbosity/repetition;
• organisation and structure of text;
• styling of headings;
• layout of text in relation to the visual elements within the space;
• consistency of style.
In traditional publishing, a copyeditor, in keeping with the publisher’s style, prepares the author’s typescript for publication. It is then sent to the typesetter to apply the copyeditor’s amendments. This typed copy is then sent to the proofreader for final checking.
For your business, providing this service will usually mean reviewing the website you have already published.
As with proofreading, if you are yet to publish your website, I can review the content you intend to publish. However, this will likely be done in isolation of the whole website. If this is the case, to review certain copyediting elements fully, you may need a final review once the website is published.
Functionality
Give your website the complete treatment and add my functionality checking service. It adds a final layer of detail and reviews how your website works. Being respectful of your web design, I will suggest ways of improving its organisation from a visitor’s perspective.
I will check for problems with:
• page descriptions;
• website structure;
• ease of use;
• links within the website;
• links to external sources, including social media.
If you wish, I can provide the functionality service without the proofreading or copyediting service.
Additional Services
Any information that you publish to attract and retain your customers or clients reflects on your business.
As with a visitor to your website, a potential customer or client reading these publications will form an opinion about you and your business. If the text you present contains flaws, it will give the impression that you do not lavish care and attention on your product or service.
I can provide proofreading and copyediting for other marketing material that you produce for your business, such as:
- adverts;
- brochures;
- direct marketing letters or emails;
- flyers;
- leaflets;
- posters;
- product packaging and/or instructions;
- social media and/or blog posts.
